TRUCKEE AREA LAKES 7/15/2010

GENERAL REGULATIONS APPLY TO THESE LAKES

BOCA: temps at Boca are 58 degrees and the lake is at 72% full capacity. Boat Launch is open! Fishing is best here up and down from the Boat Launch. With a second stock of fish recently this lake will be a sure bet for fishing. For those tossing bait, powerbait , salmon eggs and nightcrawlers with powerbait being number one. For conventional anglers the most success has been tossing small rapalas, countdowns and floaters, in sizes 3, 5 and 7 in rainbow, brown, fire minnow, and gold prints, large roostertails and kastmaster spoons, around the dam. For the guys who have boats the best areas have been the drop-off by the dam and the ledges out from the inlet. Again, minnow imitations such as rapalas in sizes 7and 9 in similar colors have been effective for Browns and Mackinaw while Dick Nites, Fishing with Gary’s spinners, Sierra Anglers spinners, and Needlefish all trailed by nightcrawlers have been good for larger Rainbows. This lake was stocked the week of 6/9/2010 & 6/16/2010.

STAMPEDE: Water temps at Stampede are 58 degrees and the lake is at 58% full capacity. This lake has been the most productive of all the area lakes in our region. Large Mackinaw ranging from 8 to 20 pounds have been taken here mostly by boaters. The Macks have gone deep, so look for them at depths starting at 60 feet and continue down. Kokanee and rainbow plug imitations in sizes 11 to 13 have been the successful for the boat guys along with jigging Buzz Bombs and Nordic Jigs. For those looking for the Smallies look no further than the dam. Gitzits and Rapalas in sizes 3 and 5 countdowns or floaters depending on time of day. Kokanee fishing has been somewhat inconsistent. The best bite has been between 40 to 60 feet. Again, start with UV lures and dodgers then switch out to general patterns later. Bite will turn off around 8 am, but will pick up again around 10:30. If you happen to miss the morning bite don’t despair, the later bite can be good also. General fishing with bait has been very good for stocker rainbows with powerbait, nightcrawlers and salmon eggs. Lures you’ll be throwing to them will be small Kastmasters in 1/12 to 1/8 sizes, Roostertails and Panther Martins also in small sizes. The rainbows that are being caught here range from 12 to 16 inches. This lake was stocked the week of 5/2/2010 & 6/8/2010 and will be stocked the week of 6/28/10..

PROSSER: Water temps at Prosser are 63 degrees and the lake is at 94% full capacity. This lake has been great for holdover rainbows in the Prosser Creek arm of the lake especially the area that can be accessed by Hobart Mills that leads to the old boat launch site. Nightcrawlers floated with mallow balls, Powerbait, or Salmon eggs have all been effective here. The area by the dam still remains slow, but the Alder Creek arm of the lake has picked up. If you’re going by boat try trolling along the cliff side of the Prosser Creek arm, along the shoreline between the two arms, and the shoreline leading to the dam. Needlefish, Dick Nites, Wedding Rings, and even Flasher combos trailed with a nightcrawler have been effective. This lake was stocked the week of 6/22/10.

DONNER LAKE: This lake is fishing great and with a second stock of DFG rainbows this lake is a sure bet for the family who wants to catch some trout.. Rainbow imitation plugs such as rapalas or AC’s and jigging Buzz Bombs could be the ticket to a large Mackinaw. For the stockers powerbait, nightcrawlers, and salmon eggs are sure bets. This lake will be stocked the week of 7/7/10 and was stocked 6/30/10.

JACKSON MEADOWS: Access is open now and fishing is excellent. Trolling by the dam or inlets that flow into the lake are a sure bet. Rapalas in sizes 7 and 9, broken-backs or original floaters, needlefish, crocodiles, Sierra Anglers Spinners, Fishing with Gary Spinners, and Dick Nites will all work. Shore fishing can also be good with inflated nightcrawlers and salmon eggs in the coves and inlets. Now is the time to get to Jackson Meadows to fish, the window will be short for some productive fishing here. This lake has not been stocked yet this year.

MARTIS LAKE: This Lake is under Special Regs- Catch and Release Only barbless lures and flies only. . . Now is the time to fish Martis before the weeds encroach and choke the lake from the shore. Some nice Browns are always caught here early on and the cutthroats always are willing to bite on whatever is tossed at them. Although the most effective method here is by pram or float tube shore anglers can do just fine through May and June. This lake is at 90% capacity and water temps are 48 degrees.

TRUCKEE RIVER: (GENERAL REG SECTION-CONFLUENCE OF TROUT CREEK TO 1000 FEET BELOW THE DAM AT TAHOE CITY)
This general reg section of the Truckee is very fishable all the way to the outflow of Donner Creek. Flows have dropped here and there is not much coming out of Tahoe so look for deep pools with plenty of flow or riffles that come into deeper water. Floating small night crawlers or salmon eggs with some split-shot will be productive along with throwing small Panther Martins and Roostertails into these areas. With easy access this is a great area to take your kids if you want to fish moving water. Please try and practice Catch and Release, they will not be stocking the Truckee with DFG Trout any more.

FISHING REPORT 7/15/2010

SPECIAL REGULATION WATER OPEN-GENERAL REG SECTION OPEN!

(DON'T FORGET TO PINCH THOSE BARBS, CATCH & RELEASE PLEASE!)

JUST A REMINDER: On the issue of proper etiquette on our waterways-give space to others who may be fishing or utilizing a particular area that you may want to fish; try not to fish one particular spot for an extended period of time, let others have a chance to fish there to; finally, respect private property boundaries and their patrons that utilize it.

Truckee River:

Truckee River:Trout Creek to Stateline barbless Flies and lures only- NO BAIT NO SCENTED LURES!
Flows: Truckee 252cfs, Boca 566cfs, Farad 632 cfs Water Temps 52-56 degrees
If you prefer dry fly fishing to nymphs now is your time on the main river. The evening hatch can be excellent if you can figure out what those finicky trout on the main stem are keying on. Caddis, Little yellow stones, PED’s, and even Flavs are the primary hatches on the Truckee now in the evenings. Be patient and wait for fish to start rising consistently then start throwing what you believe they are coming up for. 5x and 6x should cover the situation for any dry fishing. Dry action during the day can still be had by locating adult PMD hatches, and they can be good. Look for shady areas and you can usually find a sporadic hatch of these Mayflies ranging in size from 14-18. If you’re fishing subsurface look for pocket water, faster water that dumps into small pools and runs. Fish Golden Stone Nymphs as your primary fly but you can also use a large pattern such as a Hares Ear, Prince, or a Twenty Incher. Trail fly should be either a Caddis pattern, or anything that could represent a PMD nymph. Weight is still necessary as you want to get your rig down as quickly as possible to the bottom where the trout will be. Streamer fishing in that last half hour of the evening can also be productive if done correctly.

This section of wild trout water is being poached on a regular basis. It's up to you to protect it by calling 1-888-334-2258(DFG Caltip). Release All Walters. (Big Trout)! (x) = drawer number

Little Truckee River:

NO BAIT!!! NO SCENTED LURES!!! PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER ANGLERS AND THEIR SPACE! PLEASE DON’T FISH ONE SPOT FOR TO LONG

Flows: Little Truckee 227 cfs Special Regs

Flows have been decreased even more. As always, the LT is very technical, perfect drifts are a must and stepping down one leader/tippet size can make all the difference. Small PMD patterns have been excellent here recently, especially patterns by Charlie Craven. If fish are taking just under the surface, use emergers or soft hackles under a greased leader. A useful and effective technique one can use here is the Hidy Technique of swinging small ascending patterns such as PMD, Baetis and BWO’s under a sunken leader into feeding fish downstream. Also, Terrestrials, such as ants, have become very active and trout are keying on them readily. There has been an increase in PMD activity here with warmer temps so have plenty of patterns that will represent all stages. Midge patterns in light colors in sizes 20 and 22 have also been effective. Even with the slight decrease in flows San Juan Worms are still a sure bet if you’re not having luck with any other pattern. Stealth and patience is still required on this stretch so take your time and study the water before you fish it.

Inlet Section: If the wind stays down you will see good hatches of Callibaetis and Midges. Long leaders and good presentations are a must here. Callibaetis nymphs such as Rickard’s and Fox’s are great subsurface patterns here, while your standard array of midge pupa/larva patterns will suffice in sizes 18-22.
