WEEK OF 5/6/2012
SPECIAL REGULATION WATER OPEN-GENERAL REG SECTION OPEN
AND ALL TRIBUTARIES JUST BE AWARE OF SPECIAL REGS ON CERTAIN TRIBS!
DON’T FORGET TO PINCH THOSE BARBS, PLEASE PRACTICE CATCH &RELEASE!
JUST A REMINDER:On the issue of proper etiquette on our waterways, give space to others who may be fishing or utilizing a particular area that you may want to fish. Try not to fish one particular spot for an extended period of time, let others have a chance to fish there too. Finally, respect private property boundaries and their patrons that utilize it.
Truckee River: Trout Creek to Stateline barbless Flies and lures only. NO BAIT! NO SCENTED LURES!
Flows: Truckee 351 CFS, Boca 668 CFS, Farad 778 CFS water temps 48-51 Degrees.
Check out Matt Kole’s and Stefan Mcleod’s local ties for the Truckee and Little Truckee!
Big Truckee: Don’t forget that all tribs are closed now and that you are only allowed to fish from Trout Creek to Ca state line with catch and release rules only! General Reg sections and Tribs will open on 4/28/2012! Flows fluctuate during the night and early morning on certain days but for the most part the flows have been around 650 to 780 cfs below the Boca outflow. Above the outflow flows are excellent at 351 cfs and hatches have been more consistent with these stable flows. Below, fish large Stones, Princes, PT’s, and Copper Johns trailed by similar patterns in sizes 14 to 16 or patterns that are happening now such as March Brown and BWO’s. Large streamers patterns will also be effective if stripped close to the bank and will yield some of the biggest fish of the season. Big Crawfish patterns shouldn’t be overlooked either now and these can be used as a primary fly instead of Stones or large attractor patterns. Below the Boca outflowuse your high water tactics now and you’ll be successful! With the increased number of anglers utilizing the Truckee now keep an eye out for those not following the rules and report them promptly to your local warden. (x) = drawer number.

Little Truckee River: NO BAIT!!! NO SCENTED LURES!!! PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE OF OTHER ANGLERS AND THEIR SPACE! PLEASE DON’T FISH ONE SPOT FOR TO LONG. PLEASE PRACTICE CATCH & RELEASE!
Flows:Little Truckee 235 CFS Special Regs
Little Truckee: Flows have been a consistent 235cfs now which is a good thing for this tailwater as it gives the residents a bit more ability to escape angling pressure. With these moderate flows use larger patterns here such as size 14-16 Princes, PT’s or Hare’s Ears with a small trailer in a size 18-20. If you must fish this section give it a thorough going over by searching each pool for fish as they will still be spooky if approached clumsily. If you’re looking for more dry fly activity you should end up here. BWO’s, Baetis, and Midges are all represented now. Nymphing with small Mayfly, Midge, San Juans, Scuds, and small Stone imitations can produce fish. 4x and 5x tippets can be used now but perfect drifts will still be needed. Best time to fish this section is between 10 and 4. Cloudy days will produce some good midday BWO and Baetis hatches and there has even been some short lived ones on days when the sun has been out. Nymphing in the morning hours with midges in sizes 18-22 has also been effective.

TRUCKEE AREA LAKES FISHING REPORT
WEEK OF 5/6/2012
GENERAL REGULATIONS APPLY TO THESE LAKES
*Designates best areas to go fishing now. BEST FISHING NOW ON OUR LAKES IS IN THE MORNING HOURS BUT SUCCESS CAN BE HAD ABOUT ANYTIME OF THE DAY THIS TIME OF THE YEAR!
*DONNER LAKE: A lot of boat activity but few reports here suggest that the locals are doing well catching Macks and like Stampede this lake also received a plant of Kokanee fry and Rainbows so look for big Macks around the boat launch now. . The boat launch area and down is excellent now for Rainbows with lures in red yellow combinations and powerbait and salmon eggs being the main fish catchers. Trolling large minnow imitations or jigging deeper water has been the most productive technique for the boaters but top lining now around the boat launch may produce a large Mackinaw. This lake wasstocked the week of 4/29/12.
*BOCA: Boca is starting to fill and is currently at 41% capacity and this value will continue to rise as there is no water being released at the dam. Fishing in the inlet area of this lake has been excellent and some big rainbows and browns are being caught. Lures such as Rapalas, 3/8-1/4 oz Kastmasters, Krocodiles, and 3/8-1/4 oz Roostertails and Panther Martins have been go to lures. Inflated nightcrawlers, power eggs and powerbait, and Salmon eggs have all been effective. For those who can get a boat in working close to the dam with minnow imitations or the inlet at first light has brought some big results. If it’s moving water it will be regulated under the rules of the Little Truckee so don’t fish bait or barbed lures as it will lead to a hefty fine!
*STAMPEDE: Access is wide open for this lake and it is sitting at 86% capacity. For the boaters this time of year it is top lining large minnow imitations in the Sagehen, Davies, and Little Truckee arms for some large Browns and Macks. A recent plant of Kokanee fry at the boat launch may draw some big fish in so don’t let this area go untouched. If you’re after Kokonee you’ll find small but fat fish in the 10 to 12 inch range in the Sagehen and Little Truckee arms. The shallower water here during the day will warm slightly and will bring feeding fish in if temps get close to 48-50 degreees. Large Kastmasters, Thunderbolts and Panthers and Roostertails have been good for those looking for cruising Browns and Rainbows along with bait such as nightcrawlers, salmon eggs, and powerbait. Also, for those looking for cruising browns in the shallows use rapalas and small minnow imitations very early in the morning. For those just after the Macks the area between the launch and the dam has been consistent. This lake will bestocked the week of 5/6/12.
*PROSSER: Fishing here has been excellent but the word is out so don’t expect to be alone when you venture out here now. Don’t expect some monster rainbows here as the average is between 14-16 inches in length. Kastmasters in 1/8 oz in firetiger, frog, watermelon, and perch have been good colors along with Panther martins in Red and Dark colors in 1/8 oz ti ¼ oz have been good also. Nightcrawlers, Salmon eggs, Powerbait fished right outside of the inlets and at the dam have been a sure bet. For those looking for Smallies to the right side of the Dam up throwing big jigs and grub patterns such as Gitzits and Radical Glows and bouncing them off the bottom have caught some nice ones.
MARTIS LAKE: Opening day here is usually productive but no reports from this lake since the opener leaves me with little info. In the past the east side of this lake has been the most productive because of the feeder creeks that come in there. Stripping dark colored buggers or leeches tend to work well and if your throwing dries look for hatches of midges or callibaetis.
TRUCKEE RIVER(GENERAL REG SECTION-CONFLUENCE OF TROUT CREEK TO 1000 FEET BELOW THE DAM AT TAHOE CITY): Flows here are perfect at an approximate 135cfs and fish are concentrated in the larger pools. Since no stocking occurs on this stretch anymore these fish have seen everything so be patient. Small lures such as Panther Martins, Roostertails, and Needlefish are excellent choices along with 1/12 to 1/8 oz Kastmasters, for those looking for more distance, and for those throwing bait Medium nightcrawlers and the Atlas Big Boy eggs will all be excellent choices.
LITTLE TRUCKEE RIVER(ABOVE STAMPEDE 89 NORTH TOWARDS SIERRAVILLE) Very similar to the Truckee River from Tahoe city to Trout Creek one will fish this stretch with similar lures and bait. There is always some nice browns and rainbows caught here after the opener but the numbers dwindle quickly as the water levels drop and the angling pressure increases.
*JACKSON MEADOWS: Access is still limited here until further notice!
